Young Inventor Challenge FAQ

What is the Young Inventor Challenge? The Young Inventor Challenge is the premier youth Toy and Game Design challenge, hosted by People of Play. Now in its 18th year, this is the first time the challenge will be offered in person in Florida! The challenge reinforces STEAM learning and builds skills through a toy invention competition. Winners at the National level have even seen their toys brought to market!

Who can participate? Any child age 6 to 18 who registers here

How do I participate? The first step is to register! We’ll send you a Design Guide that walks you through the entire design process. Once you have your toy or game idea, you’ll need to build a prototype and come up with a three to five minute pitch about your project. Any time you run into questions or issues, our certified play experts are here to help you! Then, you’ll bring your prototype to be judged at the Young Inventor Challenge

What are the requirements for an invention? Challenge entries consist of only one prototype / invention per participant / team. All challenge entries must consist of a working prototype of the toy/game invention and a three minute pitch explaining the toy or game. Teams may be no more than 2 people. Once registered, you will receive full rules and details.

What is included with my registration? A design guide, support and feedback from Certified Play Experts as needed, entry to compete in the Challenge on August 26, support in working on pitch videos for winners.

What will the Regional Challenge be like? It will be similar to a science fair! Contestants will set up their toy and any posters or support materials and talk to the judges and the public about their inventions. Two winners will be chosen by a panel of judges. Winners will get a Villa Villekulla Toys prize pack and the chance to compete at the National competition.

What happens after I sign up? You’ll receive a .pdf design guide and competitions requirements via email. Then it’s time to get to work! Any time you have questions, you’ll have a dedicated email address to reach a Certified Play Expert for help and feedback. We’ll see you and your toy at 2pm on August 26th at the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce - 961647 Gateway Blvd Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

What will I win? Two winners will receive a Villa Villekulla Toys inventor Prize Pack and the opportunity to compete in the National Young Inventors Challenge.
